Description
“A Tale in the Desert” is a unique MMORPG for it contains no combat. It is not a competitive game but a cooperative one that depends upon the players to forward the story. Through the unique process of “lawmaking”, players develop the rules govern the game. They first propose them, then vote and ratify the law; after which the developers create the code to modify the game. No other MMOG on the market today can attribute the development of its game content and style to the players by such a dramatic influence. The story of the “stranger” who challenges the Pharaoh is a simple one: the Pharaoh boasts they have created the perfect society – the stranger tasks he and his people to do this. Through a series of 49 “tests” in 7 schools players will build, create, engage and grow this society. Tasks include using spatial relationships, the creation of art, leadership training, mathematical skills, and the playing of games. Each player chooses his/her own path and works to complete the schools accordingly.
A “telling”, as defined in ATiTD, is the completion of stranger’s challenge – intended to be 6 months. The first telling ran significantly longer but allowed the developers the time to learn much from the players. Because of this, the Second Telling will boast of a better lawmaking system (beginning with better laws from the start), improved graphics, significantly improved resource usage, new tests, better travel (it took 6 real-time hours to traverse Egypt in Tale One!) and for the first time- music!
