Bill Landsford: 2nd Raider Battalion, USMC
Took part in the LONG PATROL, 32 days behind enemy lines on Guadalcanal, this raid was led by the infamous Col. Carlson. Landsford was a machine gunner by trade, 1919A4 Browning LMG. He also worked with native guides on special reconnaissance missions throughout the Solomons (The Canal and Bougainville). IN 1944 he was transferred to the 5th Marine Division and was part of legendary John Basilone's machine gun squad. Bill went to Iwo Jima with Basilone and was not far from Basilone when he was killed, on the first day of the landings on Iwo Jima. Landsford retired from the Corps after the war and became a well known writer for television (Bonanza, Little House of the Prairie, High Chaparral, and Chips).
